John M. Oldham's pension papers show service in the Civil War. He was in Co. E, 7th Reg. Indiana Volunteers, He entered service September 1861 to serve three years. At the time he enlisted he stated his age was 18 and that he was born in Shelby County, Indiana. He was 5ft 5in tall, had a light complexion, blue eyes and red hair, occupation farmer. He was discharged by reason of disability. The disabling was from Rheumatism, June 1862. He also suffered from chronic diarrhea since December 1861.
The 1881 Terre Haute directory shows John Oldham's occupation as working for the ice company. He resided at 1 First Street, next to Michael Rusk. Eventually John Oldham and Oprah Rush divorced their respective spouses and were eventually married each other.)
