The name Langley or Longley is derived from the residence of its first bearers at places so called. It originated in "lang" or "long" combined with "ley" or "lee" and means "the long meadow". There are numerous spellings, but Langley is one most accepted in America today.
William Longley was born in New Jersey. He lived in Virginia in 1780 when he joined the state militia and served with General Lafayette in Yorktown during the Revolutionary War. He married Mary Bodine, September 1, 1784.
William received a land grant for 160 acres on the Little Pigeon River in Sevier County, Tennessee dated November 23, 1809. Mary was a member of the Forks of the Little Pigeon Baptist Church in 1807.
Jonathan married Sarah Oldham at the home of her father in Sevier County, Tennessee in 1810. He served in the state Militia during the War of 1812 under the command of Captain Duggan and Captain Lawson. In 1825 Jonathan received a land grant in, Tennessee, the same year Sarah was accepted in the Zion Hill Baptist Church. Two years later his father received a land grant in McMinn County, Tennessee. The known Children of Jonathan and Sarah were James, Reuben, Jonathan, George Washington, Arnold, Sarah, Elizabeth and Leann.
When the Oconee District was formed William, Jonathan, Joel and John C. received land grants in what is now Polk Co. William died in 1841 and Mary died in 1844 and are believed to be buried in unmarked graves in the Horn Creek Section. J, Sarah died after 1870 and they are probably buried in unmarked graves in Zion Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
Reuben married Eliza Frances Landers in Monroe County, Tennessee. He was baptized in 1854 at the same church his mother had joined 29 years earlier. He and his family were living in the Cog Hill area in 1860. Reuben enlisted in Co. C 1st Ty in the Confederate Army. He was captured July 4, 1863 in Vicksburg, Mississippi and was pardoned. He came back to McMinn Co, rejoined his company and was captured again in the Battle of Piedmont, Virginia. He was taken to Camp Morton in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana where he died on December 27, 1864. He was buried in Green Lawn Cemetery, later named Washington Park West (he chose the spelling "Langley"). (The graves from Green Lawn were later moved to Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana)

Alice was the daughter of Abraham and Nancy Jane McCrackin. James died on February he died at Mt. Zion in Loudoun County, Tennessee. Alice died sometime before February 20, 1907 when James married again to Mary A. Byrley.
Luke, the oldest son of James and Alice, was born in McMinn County, in July 1876. Sometime between then and 1880 they moved to the Fork Creek section of Monroe County. Luke married Martha Ida "Gertie" Hensley, the daughter of Fielding Hensley who had come from Cherokee County, North Carolina, where "Gertie" was born Jun 9, 1884. She died on November 1, 1949 in Sweetwater and is buried in Reed Springs Cemetery at Philadelphia, Tennessee, along with Luke, who died on May 5, 1961. William Edmond was born in Jun 1870 in McMinn County, died in Sweetwater, Tennessee on January 7 1946 and is buried in Westview Cemetery. "Mattie" Fite was born on July 11, 1869 in McMinn Co. They had worked in the Getty's mill in the Eastanallee Valley and moved to Sweetwater about the time they were married, March 1, 1890.
William Edmond was the great grandson of Edmond and Ruthena Husong Browder, who moved from Roane County, North Carolina in 1825 to near the Sullins Cemetery where they are probably buried in unmarked graves.
