National Association of Odoms: James Odom Jr married about 1798 Mary Crisp b ca 1784, daughter of Samuel Crisp Sr and granddaughter of William and Frances Crisp. James Jr bought land from his parents in Pitt Co in 1798 and afterward, but sold it in 1810. James, Jr and family moved to Wilson County, Tennessee by 1813 when their sixth child was born. Records of Wilson County, Tennessee record the family history until 1836 when Cannon Co was formed from Wilson County, Tennessee. James Jr died in 1843 in Cannon County, Tennessee, naming his wife and 10 living children. Mary Odom, age 76, is listed on the 1860 census in Cannon County, Tennessee. Dozens of their offspring are buried in the ODOM Cemetery located near Auburntown, Tennessee.

NOTES: Shadrack's parents - James ODOM, Jr [sometimes called James W. ODOM, Jr] and Mary CRISP - have been identified in the 1810 Federal Census of Pitt County, North Carolina, but had moved to Wilson County, Tennessee by the 1820 Federal, were James Jr's household can be found. Between these two censuses James Jr. PURCHASED land in Wilson County, Tennessee on 14 Jan.1811, then again on 25 Feb. 1816. Deeds of Pitt County, North Carolina show James ODOM, Jr. SELLING his land on 28 Feb. 18 10; giving Power of Attorney to Stapleton POWELL on 27 May 1812, with fin al known land sale for James Jr. made on 27 May 1812 in Pitt County, North Carolina. Therefore, we can conclude that James Jr. & Mary CRISP moved to Wilson County, Tennessee by 1810/1811 and Shadrack was born there.

Shadrack's birth year is believed to be from a Bible record, but I do not have the SOURCE of most of the birth records; this info. was " passed on" to me.

    Hello
Will of James ODOM (Jr) is attached [also called James W. ODOM, thought he source for recording his name as such is unknown to me - deed transacti ons in North Carolina record "James ODOM, Junr"]. He is the son of James ODOM, Sr. & Ann (____)

James names NINE children in his will as well as his wife. Some ODOM rese rchers, in interpreting the clerk's handwriting of the will misinterprets one of the children's names.

The child "Maryann" is mentioned two or three times in the body of the will. The LAST time she is mentioned, some well-meaning souls misinterpret the hand writing to be Margaret [due to the sloppy way the clerk recorded Maryann's name]. This abstract by well-meaning souls has been passed around and seems to be correct, until compared with the original will.

Several cousins and myself have the handwritten clerk's copy and believe that only NINE children are included in the will, and recording James ODOM, Jr. and his wife Mary CRISP with a 10th child Margaret is an ERROR.

LaVerne MARKART also mentioned to me that the census records of that era also supports only NINE children. Shadrack Jarmon ODOM & Sarah Wimbish OWEN have a child called Margaret A. ODOM b 1843 in Cannon County, Tennessee per records passed on to me [I have no PROOFS here]. Perhaps this child is confused with recording a child to James & Mary above. A thought anyway.
    Regards, Gloria
