    Notes
    • Jan, Thank you for the bit on Wm. Oldham. Would that we did on Mary! Family lore has her last name as Broctor, but, there being no Broctors in England or in the US, we believe it was Proctor, and there were Proctors here at that time, several fighting in the Rev War.

Below is a summary of our extensive search for her. Five of us have been unable to get either of them 'over the water.'

From 8-21-1963 letter from Mellinger Calihan to his aunt Elsie Grace Calihan. Roswell Smith's mother relates the story that Mrs. Callihan was a very large woman and they had difficulty getting her up the high hill in the dead of winter. They probably made a sled and used several teams of horses I am told. The hill is quite steep. Perhaps it was her wish to be buried up there. The ground would probably have been very hard, it being January 30th. Thus, the B-1839 (might have been buried when the ground thawed out.)

The following is from Anna June (Callihan) Hoffman's book, "Out of the Knotholes" which her family had printed in 1994. In talking about Thomas Callihan, Anna writes: "The story has been told that one bitter, cold winter, Tom's wife became very ill and died. Tom made a casket and tried to dig the grave, but the ground had frozen so hard and so deep, that he could not. He placed her body in the casket and carried it to a high point on a hill above his home. There, he lifted the casket to a tree and left it there until springtime, when the thaw came, and he could lay her body to rest. He started a family burial plot and buried her. He was later laid beside her and one of their children. Some folks have expressed a lack of concern on Tom's part for his wife, but I have asked those people what the poor man was to do? There were no funeral homes and it was his responsibility to take care of things from building the casket to the burial. He had to be a very strong man to survive the ordeal. This was not unusual at this time. Down through the years folks have done what they had to do to survive. Today, our way of life has gotten so much easier."

Leroy Callihan wonders if the "K" in the "MK" on her headstone could stand for a middle name rather that Callihan. Maybe Katherine, etc. He thinks that her husband, Thomas Callihan, still being alive would certainly have ensured the correct last name initial be used.

Search by Robert Leroy Callihan, 6 Nov. '02. Visited York Co. Hist. Soc. and came away with just a little promise. Saw they have ALL old records indexed and cross indexed so exact spellings aren't missed etc. Well, NO Broctors ever lived in York Co! However, there was a Wm. Proctor family in Huntington Twp. as early as 1762. He paid tax there in 1762. He was a vestryman for Christ Episcopal Church of York Springs (Rt 94 & 15) at least from 1762 thru 1766. (TC pd. tax in Huntington Twp. 1783]. Mary Proctor, daughter of Wm. & Mary was baptized at this church on 24 Oct 1762! Plausible - our Mary would have been 8. No d.o.b. given. [Looks like this Mary married a man named Jones./s/ Lyla "Noreen" Callihan] Wm's name doesn't appear on tax roll again, but a John & Sarah Proctor pd tax in 1795. But Wm was a vestryman for the churrch at least thru 1766. Also John and Sarah Proctor and 5 kids paid tax there in 1795. There was a letter in the file dated 1981 stating a 480 page Proctor Gen book - covering England 1546 thru Rob't USA & John, Eng & USA to present. However no one donated a copy, but is or was available from A. Carlton Proctor, 8 Surry Ln., W. Peabody, MA 01960 - $35. The Proctors of York Co. must be in it, to be in archives files. This establishes Proctor as an English name. Mary Proctor "English girl." No way of telling if this is a match. There is an even chance I guess. I have now checked everything I can think of, except maybe Cumberland Co. - just N of Huntington Twp (bordering) might have some Proctors or even Broctors. Thomas, of course, was in Cumberland Co. as late as 1780. Robert Leroy Callihan

Per Leroy: "Then Duyane [Bowser] sent this info: Land grants in Bedford County: William Proctor 400 acres, 25 Sep 1784. Also Bed Co Census of 1800 - Wm. Proctor." This all takes on a new meaning since you [Noreen Callihan] added that Thomas C's app for those 2 warrants were signed by Wm. Proctor. Does that all give a ring of credibility to our Mary being a "Proctor?!" "An English girl." Also that he could have met, married, lived in Huntington Twp, York Co. and pd tax there in 1793, then in conjunction with her family living there, applied for the land warrants available in Bed. Co. He, of course, went to Bedford Co. earlier as he "made improvements on land in 1785." He paid the Bed Co. Supply tax in 1785, also.
