    Notes
    • On the King George Co, VA tax rolls for 1780 there appears Samuel Oldham with one son.

There is a record of a Lt. Oldham from King George Co. VA who fought in the Revolutionary War.

During the Civil War the King George Co. records were put in a wagon to be taken to safety, but the Yankees burned the wagon.

Edward was a member of the vestry of Hanover Church, King George Co VA - Bishop William Meade's "Old Churches, Ministers and Families of Virginia," p. 185.

Buried, Vestry, Hanover Parish, King George County, Virginia. have established his death date as circa 1795. I have from the Circuit Court Clerk King George Co. Virginia an inventory of his estate filed at the April court 1795.

OLDHAM, Edward b. d. & place unknown, m. 1791 Sarah DISHMAN, inherited land King George Co. Virginia 1791 from Samuel OLDHAM, magistrate & judge Westmoreland and King George counties. Edward was a member of the vestry of Hanover Parish, King George Co. Virginia. Edward d. 1795 King George Co. Virginia. Who were his parents & what was his link to Samuel Oldham?

I did find in Westmoreland County, Virginia Order Books 1758-1764 - reel 60: 27 November 1759 "Willoughby Newton & Benedick Middleton gent. Churchwardens of Cople Parish against Elizabeth Widdell" a judgement against Elizabeth with punishment "Ordered that Elizabeth Widdell dos owe her master Samuel Oldham gent. for the Trouble of his House, while she Lay in with a Bastard according to Law."

This "suggests," to me at least, that perhaps Edward was that bastard baby and therefore the reason he inherited, as I have been unable to find any recorded children of Samuel Oldham.

Anyone stumbled across Edward and Samuel Oldham? Will be glad to share any information I have which may be helpful to you.

      Thank you for your response.
I have been chasing this relationship between Samuel (I have found him also designated as Capt. Samuel - obituary VA Gazette and Public Advertiser 13 March 1790) and Edward Oldham and have come up with only this one link, the
property in King George Co.known as Peach Hill. King George Co Land Tax Books 1787 - 1790 show it recorded in the name of Samuel Oldham. 1791 showed it in his estate. 1792 through 1794 it was in the name of Edward. 1795 it was recorded in the estate of Edward Oldham. The only faint clue I have been able to locate is the Westmoreland Co. Court Order Book 1758-1761 in which a bond woman of Samuel Oldham's was brought before the court and whipped for the birth of an illegitimate child. She also had time added to her bond for the "inconvenience" to his household. Could this child have been Samuel's? As I have been able to find no record of his having had any legitimate recorded offspring, could Edward have been this child and the reason for his inheriting from Samuel? Intriguing, isn't it.

Thank you for suggesting volumes which might provide further clues. I appreciate your interest and assistance. We can't do it all by ourselves, can we.

      Susan
