I found your "Oldham Research Repository" on ancestry.com about 5 years ago when I was searching for my grandmother's g-grandmother Caroline Benton Harrell (Harroll). I took a few years off to enjoy my new baby & have recently renewed this, urating hobby. In doing so, I have contacted many family members for their input and updates to my files. My cousin in Texas recently went through some things of MY g-grandmother's and found what he calls "Etta's Bible". He scanned me the pages out of this bible & while this was in the possession of my g-grandmother, Henrietta Pearl (Jones) Bickers it was originally the family bible of John S. & Caroline (Benton) Harrell. The 1st entry begins with their marriage and is continued through the years. The 1st entries are in John's handwriting which changes with the record of his death to what I am assuming is Caroline's handwriting. From there the handwriting distinctly changes to Henrietta's handwriting and then to my Aunt Celeste (Taylor) Bickers handwriting who passed in 1999. So basically there is 140 years of information. I am planning a 'road-trip' this summer to Texas, Illinois, & Indiana to gather some more records and can't wait to see this treasure in person and get some photos of it. I recently acquired a copy of the divorce decree petition (Bill) on Barnissa Benson Benton Bridges where she attempted to divorce James W. Bridges in 1844. If you are still interested in this family line, I am more than happy to send you the bible scan files as well as any information & documentation I have, inclusive of the extended lines (John & Caroline's children) and their information. Have a great weekend, Lori (Hunt) Zierden 909-641-5047 16421 Aliso Dr. Fontana, CA 92337 thx4notcn1@aol.com

subjectJohn S. & Caroline (Benton) Harrell

I received the Confederate Pension Application that Caroline (Benton) Harrell filed in 1907 for John's (hubby) Confederate Pension. I don't have it scanned yet or transcribed, but some of the major points are:

Caroline filed Nov. of 1907. Her address was 1709 Gentry St., Houston, TX (home of her daughter, Jackie A. Newton). She had resided in Harris County since Jun 1869. Marriage date is 25 Sep 1859 which confirms what is written in the Harrell-Bickers family bible. John's death is 13 Jun 1878 - also confirming what is recorded in the bible.

She signed the application in her own hand and handwriting can now determine which entries in the bible are made by Caroline - very distinct writing.

One of the witnesses to the application with sworn testimony is John's brother, William V. Harrell. In his testimony he states he resides in Talladega, Alabama and that he is 76 years old. Says he 1st knew John S. Harrell "in Montgomery county, Alabama in 1837, when he was born. He is my brother." To the 5th Interrogative William states pertaining to John's military service, "...said John S. Harrell first enlisted in May 1862 as a Partisan Ranger, from Montevallo in Shelby County, Ala. In the early part (about February) of 1863 the Partisan Rangers was formed into two companies [making a squadron] of cavalry. I was elected Captain & said Jno. S. Harrell was Lieutenant of one of the companies Company B. Lewis' Squadron. Later we took in two more companies and were then formed into a batallion Thos Hall Lewis, Major commanding. Shortly after that we were brigaded with C. J. Armstead's & Chas. P. Ball's Regiments, and known as Pillow's Brigade. Said John S. Harrell served until September 1864, when he was captured at Lafayette, Ga. & sent as a prisoner to Johnson's Island, where he remained until the surrender, when he was parolled." On cross-examination, William further states that at the time of he & John's enlistment they were both living at father's home and that they were the "only Harrell's in the Brigade at any time."

John's attached military record states that he was "captured at LaFayette, Georgia on 24 Jun 1864 and was released 14 Jun 1865 near Sandusky, Ohio on taking the oath of allegiance."

Other documents attached to file is the Mortuary Warrant filed by Jackie A. Newton (John & Caroline's daughter) to prove the death of Caroline on 23 Mar 1922 in order for Jackie to be reimbursed for funeral/burial expenses of Caroline. This is confirmed with the copy of Caroline's death certificate that I have in my possession.

Thought everyone would enjoy this great information & I will get it scanned and transcribed so that we can get it up on the Benton family site.
