    Notes
    • Bob's first job A&P on west Washington street near Mt. Jackson - in Butcher shop. Worked there about one year. Played in Arthur Jordan Band, Mrs. Gates dancing class. His mother would pick him up and take him there. His job every Friday night was to clean the fish out, taking out all the ice, cleaning the tubs and refilling the tanks.

Used to be the kid in dancing school that smelled like fish = they called him the four eyed fishman. Went to Garden City #8 elementary school - had Miss Hunt for first grade teacher, Mrs. Chandler the heavy set fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Lentz the sixth grade teacher, fourth grade 1937 a guy had a 1937 Ford convertible - was a teacher, but bob doesn't remember his name principal Mr. Whitacre taught history. Must have been 4th grade when cars began to mean something to him. Wanted to be a basketball player, but wasn't very coordinated, but he thought he was good. Used to be the grade schools all had intramural teams, then they went to Ben Davis for tournament and played in the gym. Used to play Flackville, 30th & Lafayette Road., Glenns Valley Mars Hill, Ben Davis Ele, Clairmont, those games until 8th grade years, were fun and exciting. Came time for high school, his mother thought he should be an engineer, so he should go to Purdue, but should prepare himself by going to Tech high School (best school for pre engineering) Isabelle was going to Shortridge because she wanted to be a scientist……her children should have the best education and that wasn't available at Ben Davis. Gladys drove Izzie to Shortridge everyday. Bob took the feeder bus to Mt Jackson, then took the street car that went down to the corner of Ill and Washington St then got a trolley that went to Tech high School. Did that for 2 1/2 years then moved to 3861 or 5 N. Delaware Street. Graduated in three years. H. H. Anderson principal. Graduated early so he could get one year of college in before he had to go to the war. (WWII). Didn't have to go - kids in college were deferred for educational purposes.

Carried the Indianapolis Times while on Rockville Road. Mother used to drive him in the car sometimes, usually on bicycle

Clarence had a c-card for Gas Rationing, one of the ladies who's son was in the service complained that her boy was in the war and he was being hauled around in a car with gas that should be used for the war effort. Tore up a set of tires on the 35 Buick driving through a wheat stubble field……throwing rocks at neighbors garage windows, fixing his mother a glass of water (from the john)……went to Culver Military Academy during the summer, because he was rambunctious.

One time Clarence asked Bob to wash the car - that was his Saturday job (35 Buick and 37 Buick) Bob washed those cars and the 37 was Dark Blue 4 door sedan - nice polish on it - pretty car……the 35 was a 2 door sedan had a tire on the outside of the trunk in a metal case and he had polished the car and the only thing he could think of to make the dark green look darker was to put oil on it - he polished the whole car with motor oil. It took 6 months to get all the oil off of it. It looked pretty, but it had spots on it. He got the strap in the garage for that. Bob lost the razor strap = so Clarence began using a belt instead. Was usually used on a Friday night - cause that's when Clarence got home. Often by Friday night Bob had forgotten what he'd done wrong. Playmate on Rockville Road was son of football coach at Washington HS Ben Bogue. Son of Henry - rough and tough coach…quaker…..used to get on Bob unmercifully because he wasn't a physical kind of kid. Washington HS was a tough school back then - kids out of Haughville.

Dated Ted's aunt Jackie for a time.

Robert F. Oldham, age 85, son of Clarence E. and Gladys M. Forsythe Oldham, passed away peacefully Tuesday afternoon. He spent his life serving others as nursing home administrator, Mason, Scoutmaster, minister, and friend. He lived 85 years loving everyone he met. He was an Elder and 50 year member of Central Christian Church, a Stephen Minister with Orchard Park Presbyterian Church in Carmel, Indiana.
