    Notes
    • Helen Quinn notes: Minor had other children, but sometime between 1850 and 1860 he disappeared from the Fayette County, Indiana Census. Might have gone to Rush County, Indiana.

      1847 Fayette County Deed Book:
13 Sep 1847 William Oldham from Minor J. and Nancy Oldham
13 Jan 1848 William Oldham from Jesse and Martha Oldham Quit Claim Deed

Checked Rush County court records and didn't see Minor anywhere - also not in Shelby County, Indiana. Minor and Nancy may have died before 1860. Rebecca is still listed in the 1860 Census.

Yes Minor and Martha did have a brother George W. I have been in touch with a descendant of him and we can document the connection. He was living with Ella in 1900 in Burlington and is listed as her brother. Also I have two documents that record Ella's name as Sarah E. Also records calling her E.E., and Ellen. Her own grandaughter thought her name was Ella Eldora. So we aren't sure what her actual given name was at this point though there is no doubt it is the same person. But she was most commonly called Ella and Ellie. There is a belief that there was a third sibling, I think Rebecca, but i need to look into this further.

I and another descendant of Ella and Harvey Raines would very much like to have all the documents relating to Ella's line. I know you have everything packed away but I was wondering if , just off the top of your head, you could tell us how we might send for them ourselves. We would like to have an actual copy of Martha's Obit, A copy of Stephen's will, James' will, copies of the church records, picture of the house of Stephen and the church, copies of the pictures of stones, ect. I know you or someone said the person who did a lot of research on this line is dead. Do you happen to know where her research holdings are now? Again thank you for the help and let me know if there is anything you would like from me. Best regards, penny b

I am in the process of preparing a reply to a lady who is researching Minor Oldham. She thinks Minor and Martha's daughter Ella might have had a brother George W. I'll transcribe her letter and forward it to you later today.

That would be great Jan.I can't recall if I told you that Ella Oldham wasn't Minor and Nancy Carson's but rather Minor and Martha Hull's daughter. I noticed her in your data base as Nancy's and couldn't remember if I told you that.Thank

Not sure if I should post here or start new. Anyway, after reading your and Jan's posts I started looking for Minor's children in the 1860 census. Found the following in the
1860 census for Charlestown township, Clark county, Indiana. Alexander Kirkpatrick age 45 Anna Kirkpatrick age 38 William Oldham age 20 Jane Oldham age 15 James Oldham age 12 Mary O. Bottoff age 18

I can't find any connection of an Alexander Kirkpatrick to Oldham however, there is a David m. to Jane Oldham but they don't have a child named Jane. Also a John m. to a Nancy Oldham, no children. Could this be Minor's daughter? She's the correct age but, what happened to his son William? Any thoughts?

Dear Jan, I'm looking for information on Kiner OLDHAM b. England m. Martha Hull b. Ireland. They had at least one daughter, Ella Eldora OLDHAM b.5 JUL 1856 in IN. Do these sound at all familiar?

      Thanks, Penny Broeg broeg@willinet.net

Don't remember if I sent the following info or not but can't hurt to send again.

When we were at the Iowa Genealogical Society we spent lots of time trying to find something on the death of Minor in 1859. We could find no record of his death in Iowa nor of his marriage to Martha Hull. Also, he supposedly died in Neils or Niles, Ia. There is and never was a Neils or Niles Ia. The only thing we could assume is that it was never a town but simply a refueling stop along side the railroad tracks. This assumes that he did, in fact, die in some type of train accident.

Don't know where to go from here but thought I'd let you know so someone won't plow ground that's already been plowed.

Miner Oldham was found living with Rebecca Oldham in the 1850 census for Fayette County, Indiana. Rebecca was 73 years old. Also in the household were Nancy, 20 years old; Jane, 5 years old; and William 2 years old. Everyone was born in Indiana except Rebecca who was born in Virginia. Also, they were living in the same neighborhood as Philip Shepler. Next door to Rebecca Oldham was William Oldham. William was 35 years old, his wife, Mary Ann (born in Ohio) was 31 and the children, all born in Indiana were: George 10 Louisa 6 David 5 Rebecca J. 3 Louis 1 - born in Virginia. Minor was killed in Neil, Winnebago County, Iowa. The town is no longer on the map of Iowa. Jim Collins found it on a 1912 Iowa map. Their marriage license is very hard to read. However, they were definitely married on July 23 in Marion County, Indianapolis,Indiana. The year is hard to read. It looks like 1853 and I need to check the books downtown again. I have three copies and none are easier to read than the others.I found the middle initial of 'T' on his marriage license. NOTE: The license states that he is of age and that Martha's mother gives her consent and that the consent is on file. I don't have a copy of that! Can I get a copy of that? 1900 census for Fayette Co, Waterloo Township shows a Jesse Oldham that may be related. It's not my family so I'm not following up on it.

I am also interested in this family. I have looked for many years for descendents. I was contacted by a researcher in 1999 that said her grandfather ended up with the family bible of James and Janie Oldham Turner.

She was going to send me further inforamtion, but I never heard back from her.
