Gracie Lee Oldham (Sketch written by her daughter Jewell)
I will attempt to write a sketch of my Mother's life, Gracie Lee Oldham. She was the third child born to Johnie Oliver and Bettie Leona Allen Oldham on April 22, 1882.
On December 9, 1900 she was united in marriage to A. Paul Kinder and to them was born a son Allen Sidney.
In the fall of 1905 Paul Kinder passed away. And Mama and Allie when home to live with her Papa and Mama over near Portales, New Mexico.
It was on November 1, 1908 she became Mrs. Pate Hardy, and with Allie and a daughter of PAte's by a previous marriage, Bamma May, moved to the Plains of Texas. To them were born 2 girls, Jewell and Lorene.
Busy were her days on this H - - (H-Bar) Ranch, 5 miles North of Shallowater, Texas.
She was a homemaker, an excellent cook, a fine seamstress, a friendly neighbor, a member of the first Canning Club organized in Lubbock County, a Christian woman, and one that was admired by all that knew her.
The large orchard, the grape vines, berry patches, and gardens were her pride and joy. And many jars of fruits, vegetables and meat filled her cellar shelves.
The fresh water running through the trough in the little milk house cooled the mil and butter she had carefully placed there for her family's needs.
In sickness and death she was never too tired to lend a helping hand.
Her time was limited; her work on earth was finished Janry 15, 1924.
And I copy this poem in memory of her.
MEMORIES OF MY MAMA
I knew a kind little lady,
Who was young, fair and gay,
I am longing to see this sweet lady,
That God has called away.
We called this little lady, Mama
Now, the angels have taken her away,
And I'm writing this in her memor
For I'm going to meet her some day.
Long, long ago in the past,
We could hear her kind, gentle voice,
Singing to us children in the firelight
Which was our fondest choic.
These memories of this little Lady,
Shall never fade away
For Jesus died on the Cross
For us to see her some day.
On Mary 17, 1956 (Uncle) Pate Hardy had a partial stroke and stayed in the West Texas Hospital, Lubbock on week.
His first illness in 40 years and he was 86years old. He recuperated from this nicely.
Mary 21, 1964 Pate died in the Hospital in Lubbock.
