    Notes
    • Zera Oldham located in Carroll County some years before the War Between the States, his people having migrated from North Carolina. There were known relatives in the Kosciusko area; and the two family groups continued to "claim kin," though I have never known what the relationship was, or in what generation. Estelle Oldham of the Kosciusko branch married the celebrated William Faulkner of Oxford. The late Dr. Frank Smythe of Memphis told me his mother was of the same branch; so we claimed kin. The Winona branch has produced no famous citizens. There are also Oldhams in Middle Tennessee, who trace their ancestors to North Carolina. Dortch Oldham of Nashville and I were unable to find closer ties than that, although he carries the Oldham nose, a recognizable family mark. So much for the general family background; no systematic genealogical record has come to my notice.

Great-grandfather Zera had two sons: Great-uncle Dan, who went to Texas, and Zera Newton, my grandfather, born August 16, 1845. In 1861, at age sixteen, he enlisted in Zollicoffer's infantry Brigade, CSA. He told me that his outfit engaged in numerous "skirmishes" (he never called them battles) until his captain, somewhere in East Tennessee, gave him and another private verbal furlough (nothing in writing) to return home and put in a crop. On fording a creek, they were taken into custody by two of General Nathan Bedford Forrest's scouts, marched into camp, and given mules to ride. Not only a brilliant tactician, Forrest was also an effective recruiter. Z.N. Oldham was with Forrest on his famous raid of Federal-occupied Memphis, and he finished the War with Forrest.

After being mustered out, "Big Papa" acquired 160 acres in northeastern Carroll County, with a few acres in Montgomery. The location lies between Scotland Baptist Church and Columbiana Methodist on the old county road. There he constructed the standard dogtrot home of the yeoman farmer, with his bedroom in Carroll County, warmed by a fireplace and chimney in Montgomery. Industrious, frugal, and progressive, he developed his acreage. There were fertile fields and pastures, and extensive orchard, and a productive family garden. He also operated a cotton gin and grist mill on the place.

Zera Newton married Mary Margaret Bennett. They were favored with seven sons and one daughter, whom they reared in the conservative Christian ethic of the Victorian Period. From eldest to youngest, they were: Joe, Sim, Will, Lillian, George Daniel ("Gig"), John Bennett ("Captain"), Jesse Walker, and Benjamin (died in infancy.)

Jesse Walter married Hattie Stafford, daughter of John L. and Mary Jane (Davis) Stafford. I was their first child, born August 16, 1909. My sister, Juanita, came December 7, 1911, and died in 1983.

And that is the article in its entirety. No, as far as I know this is not my line. I have information on them because of same surname (Bennett) and location. Possibly, if we get back another generation or two, there will be a connection.

Will let you know when I get the page done. Sure hope this helps!
