TRIPLE FUNERAL FIRST HELD AT NEW VALHAL

Big Crowd in attendance at Church and Cemetery for Services for

Victims of Crossing accident at Clear Creek Sunday.

Mysterious Disappearance of Father 19 years ago recalled.

A great crowd this morning attended the triple funeral of Mrs. Ivis Smedley, Mrs. James McFall and baby Margaret Jane McFall at the South Side church in Charge of Rev. Joseph Campbell and Hezikah Deckar. The church was not near large enoo pay a tribute to the three victims of the horrible crossing accident at Clear Creek. A great number of those in attendance were relatives, as it is estimated that the dead women were related to nearly a thousand people in Monroe and Brown county. A great crowd also turned out for the burial at new Valhalla Cemetery. This was the first burial service at Valhalla.

The death of Mrs. Smedley and Mrs. McFall recalls the disappearance of their father, John Hays, Jr., about 19 years ago. The disappearance of Hays was one of the sensations of Brown and Monroe Counties at that time. Hays was one of thede store and had an interest in a big stave factory. He was also interested in politics. He had a fine family of children and was very proud of his children. One night he left for parts unknown, taking a considerable amount of ready money with him. He drove a team to Norman Station and left it there. From that day to this he has never been heard of by relatives or neighbors. He completely disappeared. He was the postmaster of the Brown County village where he lived, but his accounts with Uncle Sam were straight to the penny. No one went with him-no word of his whereabouts ever drift back to Brown and Monroe Counties."

John Robert Hays told that during the funeral, a bum was standing in the back of the church. No one knows who he was, but always wondered if it was John Jr. Letter from John Jr's daughter, Mrs. Jean Stillion says they never saw or heard ft in 1908.

      *********

In 1905 the Illinois Central Railroad built a line from Indianapolis to Effingham, Illinois. The line ran from Morgantown across the southwest corner of Jackson Township, Brown County, IN. Helmsburg was the main station. Two trains a day from Indianapolis, and two from Effingham, brought freight, mail, and passengers. Horse drawn hacks took people and wagons transported mail and freight from the station to Nashville.

I did some checking at our Archives on the Tax Records, which are not complete for all years. The first one closest to 1908-09 was for 1902. John A. Hays owned 267 acres which he was paying tax on in Johnson Township. The next Tax Record we have is for 1911 and John was not on that one. So that didn't help much.

The next thing I checked was the court cases he was involved in. There were two besides the divorce. On Sept. 10, 1908 he was sued along with a James Deckard for money he owed to Nashville State Bank, it was about $1100. It said he was nowhere to be found and was absent for some time according to his wife. The next one was for June 2, 1909. A garnishment order was isssued to Kurtz Slack Stave Co. of Jackson County. There were no other details that said if they found John, of if he still worked there, etc.

You start to feel sorry for the guy, looks like with the divorce and the lawsuit he was in a lot of hot water. He might have just decided it was better to disappear than face all these problems. If he was working in Jackson County you might do some checking there, I don't know what to tell you to look for though.

I checked the few newspapers we have and found no mention of him. I hope some of this helps. You may be hearing from Jeanette a little later, she's going to be checking on family connections too.
