      Hi Jan,

Do you have a person in your family tree that was names Walter Hays? He would have been in Jasper Co. IL sometime in the 1800's. Just curious.

Yes, my Uncle Walter Hays. He was in Jasper Co., IL. Are you part of my family? I've been trying to piece it together for years.

      Hi again Jan,

No, I am not a relative. I was in Jasper Co. on the farm of a friend hunting mushrooms yesterday. On a trail beside a creek in the woods, my friend showed me a rock outcrop in the side of a hill. The name Walter Hays is carved in the stone I can make out part of the date, Dec . 2_, 18__. My friend said that he had first found this rock when he was a young boy (1940's) growing up on the family farm in Wheeler, IL. He had always wondered who Walter was and even wondered if he might have been buried there. As I said, the date numbers were not very easy to read. I thought that the year date might have been 180_. It is sandstone and has worn away over the years. If the date is 180_, maybe it was an earlier relative named Walter Hays. Do you have birth and death dates on your Uncle Walter or his ancestors? We would really like to know more about Walter too. I just find things like this very interesting so thought I would see if I could contact a relative.

Walter Abraham Hays was born in 1886. He died in 1971 in St Louis, MO, where he was an attorney. Perhaps he carved his birthdate Dec 17, 1886?

Would your friend consider sending me a picture of the rock? I know Walter lived in Wheeler, IL as a child.

Like you, I find this type of find so very interesting. Walter's son John Killoren Hays still lives in Effingham, IL. He's a printer.

      Good Morning Jan,

Yes, I will give my friend a camera so he can take the pictures and just give me the camera back so I can have them developed. I'm sure he would do that for you. I think he will be very pleased to have the mystery of "who was Walter Hay"eey can brush the stone a bit so the dates will show up better for the picture. The lettering was very neat and detailed like an adult had carved it.

I found your GEDCOM on Ancestry.com and see that John Collins Hays and Ada Alice Woodall were his parents.

I did a bit of searching myself last night and found several Walter Hays listed here and there. The LDS Family Search web site has listed :

      (1) Walter Hays, born May 1880 in Jasper Co. Illinois - Father: Wm .Henry Hays & Mother: Hele. Wilson .

There was a William Hays, age 16 and his younger brother John age 12, living and working on the farm of Wm. Wharlon in Smallwood Twp. in Jasper Co. IL in the 1870 census.

      (2) SSDI has Walter Hays, birth date as Dec 7, 1886 - death date as Nov. 1971 in MO. (this fits more with what you have on him).

Could there have been more that one Walter Hays (maybe a cousin with the same name) or as happens sometimes, just wrong data submitted by someone?

I will keep in touch. I should see my friend this week end.
