  Notes	Stuart Smith Notes: From grave stone "Edwin Oldham 1824-1878 and Hannah Penn Oldham wife 1825-1913 and their oldest son Thomas Edwin Oldham, died 26 Oct 1923" This confirms the connection of Thomas Edwin to Edwin and Hannah, which is different from the chart in Peter Oldham 1812-1894 ("Unsung Heros and Heroines of Australia") Thomas first worked as a clerk and in 1873 took up a position at the Hobart Goal. In 1878 he became Section and Receiving Officer, and just prior to his marriage on 15 Oct 1879 he was promoted to Deputy Goaler and Assistant Superintendent with a salary of 125 pound per annum. This was second in command at the Goal with only the Governor over him. He continued in this position and his salary in 1880 was 150 pounds. On 22 June 1881, he was appointed Clerk Dispenser, which was one step down, but his salary remained the same. His former position was taken by a John Smith who was paid less, but who had been with the Penal Service for a longer period. Thomas remained at the Goal until 1890. In 1895 he aquoted his occupation as Municipal Clerk and the 1914 Electoral Roll lists him as clerk.
