Bio by Mrs. P J Winstead of Callao has written this article about her great-uncle who was a Civil War veteran. The picture shows John Oldham when he was in ia Veteran's Home in California in 1912.

John Oldham was born and grew up at Oldhams, a small town in Westmoreland County that was named for his family.

He had a sister Sarah, who married Tom Straughan and had five children; Virginia, Shook, Soloma, Sarah and Sedric with whom she made her home after the death of her husband and who lived at the home, Providence Hall. This home was rebuilt many years later by her grandson, Orrem Straughan. It still stands today and is owned by her great-granddaughter, Mrs. Hazel Balderson.

His other sister was Octavia Delilah who married John Taylor Winstead and lived at Village. She had four children: Warren, Cora, Ada and Etta.

When John grew up he joint the Navy, and when the Civil War started he became a member of the Union Navy. He was soon promoted to Captain and traveled to many places. When the war was over and he had retired, he was placed in a home for veterans in California.

As he grew older he began to think of his family in Virginia and wrote to the postmaster in Village to locate some of its members for him. He put him in contact with his sister Delilah who was then living at Village. They corresponded for several years and at one time he sent her five twenty-dollar gold pieces as they were often paid their pension money in gold. She felt quite rich.

Finally he decided to leave California and return to Virginia to be with his family, but his sister having passed away before he arrived, he went to live with his nephew, Delilah's son, Warren Winstead. Warren's father, John Taylor Winstead, a Confederate veteran, was also living in this home and the two being on opposite sides did not always agree.

Uncle John had a large wen on the side of his face. This he refused to have removed and always kept it bandaged. He had also lost one arm while in the Navy. He received a very good pension, but this was a sore spot for my grandfather as he received only $25.00 every three months for four years of service in the Confederate Army.

John was quite a restless fellow and never seemed satisfied very long at one place. He moved from Warren's home and lived for a while with his niece, Mrs. Ada Dungan; from there he moved to a sawmill shanty and lived along for awhile. He finally moved back with his nephew Warren, who had built for him a small house in his yard where he could be alone. He stayed there until he passed away at a very old age and was buried in the family cemetery.
