    Notes
    • Notes by Judith Jernigan Oldham:

Ed Oldham remembers his Grandmother Sorrels smoking a pipe. She died at the home of her step daughter in law, Harry and Eva Hinkins.

In September, 1998, Ed, Fern and I visited the graves mentioned below.

Notes from the Research Librarian of the Mid Continent Library in Independence, Jackson County, Missouri:

"I have quite a bit of information about the JULIAN/OLDHAM family. Some of the details agree with what you have written and some do not, but I leave it to you to sort out. First, I looked for the 1880 census record for Mary Francis, Taylor, Pryor and John/Jack JULIAN as children, living with her their father, John Julian, and his wife, name unknown. If those are the correct names of her brothers, I found the family, but the father's name was William. He was 38, born in Tennessee, and a carpenter. They were in Blue Township, Jackson County, E.D. 25, Sheet 11, Family #95. The mother was Mary A., 28, born in Missouri; Jane (not Mary Francis) was listed as 10 years old, Prior L. 6, and John S. 4. All the children were born in Missouri. Also in the household were Jane Julian, 70, mother of William, born in Tennessee; Clementina? MOORE, 63, mother-in-law of William and in other words, mother of
Mary A.; Benjamin JULIAN, 34, brother of William, born in Missouri, William E.? KELLY?, 18? nephew of William Julian, also born in Missouri. Also listed just above, in family #94, neighbors to these Julians, were Prior L.
JULIAN, 49, Farmer, born in Tennessee, and his wife Milli? A., 36 or 34, born in Missouri, and John S., 45, brother to Prior. I am sending you a copy of the microfilm page the two families are on, so you can try to decipher it for
      yourself.

The family listed below them has a mistake, I believe. Although it appears that Walter Scott was living in their household, I believe the #96 should be up one line, so that Walter is the head of household for family 96 and not in any way connected to the JULIAN listing.

I believe this is your "Mary Frances" (although I'm rapidly becoming confused because there were at least 2 Pryors, two Johns, etc.) because I am also sending the obituary of William Julian who died in 1915. His children are listed as: Pryor, John, Taylor, and Mrs. Jennie OLDHAM of Hugo, Oklahoma. I realize that the census called her Jane, you call her Mary Frances, and the obituary calls her Jennie, but if the brothers are correct, she is the same person.

You mentioned the Courtney area connection. I am also sending you, by postal mail, copies of pages from the Courtney Cemetery listings from "Recent Readings of Jackson County Cemeteries..." published by the Jackson County Genealogical Society. Often called the Courtney-Mann Cemetery, I'm sure it is the one you referred to. One list was compiled in 1989, the other somewhat later. They are filled with JULIAN listings, but you will have to sort them out by families. It is easier using the JCGS list, because they group them by burial location. So we see together Myli Williams Julian, Prior C.,Benjamin, and Jane plus R.C. Julian. In another group, in Row 3, are Mary MOORE Julian, William E., Clementine MOORE, and P.L. J. This group would seem to be the group from the census. In Row 4 are Ella, 1866-1944, Ella Lea, 1902-1943, W. H. OLDHAM, and Frances, SORRELES (recorded elsewhere as SORRELLS), dau. of William May Julian, born 1870, d. 1948. This would seem to be your Mary Francis, but it seems that she remarried. Also in that Row is Ralph C. OLDHAM, 1903-1952,plus 2 unmarked graves.

The material from "Recent Readings was compiled by Gary Toms and by Jane Short Mallinson, both friends. It says that access to the cemetery is by visiting the Sugar Creek Police Department for instructions. So I called Jane to ask her whether that suggestion was still valid. She explained that it is, and said the cemetery is north of Courtney and 291. I am also sending a copy of the newspaper article from 27 March 1930 when Benjamin MANN's daughter Helen, married John H.Julian, son of Mr. and Mrs. Pryor L. Julian.

I know that this is confusing without seeing the copies, but I will send them to you by postal mail. And there were other JULIANs in the area, some related and some not. There are also two William OLDHAM listings in our Independence Examiner index: an obituary on 11 April 1933 and one on 5 March 1928. Even that is confusing! I hope that you will be able to sort this all out. Copies in this department are 15 cents each. There is no charge for our research, but donations to this department are always appreciated.

Ed Oldham remembers his Grandmother Sorrels smoking a pipe. She died at the home of her step daughter in law, Harry and Eva Hinkins.

In September, 1998, Ed and Fern visited the graves mentioned below. We found the Julian Mann-Cemetery at the LeFrage Mining Company site.

Ed was able to add a few dates from the headstones. Some of the stones were too worn to read. There was a hand crafted stone for W.H. Oldham, made by Earl Oldham with no dates. The cemetery was on land that is being quarry mined by a company called LaFrage, and the company that owns the surrounding land is taking care of the cemetery.
