I descend from The First Colony Rector family thru son John. John's son,
Daniel b. in Germantown in 1738 and d. 01 May 1814 in Clark Co., Ohio.
Daniel m. Nancy Ann Oldham b. 1744 Fauquier Co, VA and d. in 1818. Nancy Ann
was the daughter of John Oldham b. 17 Oct 1708 Northumberland Co., VA and d.
Mar 1765 Hampshire Co., VA and Ann Conway b. Lancaster Co., VA and d. 17
Nov 1795 Hampshire Co., VA. m. 27 Sep 1734 Westmoreland Co. Va.

I am researching Ann Conway and cannot find proofs of her birth and
parents. I'm hoping someone will be able to help. (end of this message)

      My response:

First, as a frequent attendee at National conferences of genealogists, I have learned that nearly every conference has a speaker on the subject of how to find your female ancestors. ( No doubt, a good fee ensues for the speaker.) The short answer: It's not easy.

Second, as a student of various Oldham families in colonial VA, NC, and KY, in an effort to determine to which Oldham family my ancestor Jesse Oldham, formerly of Virginia, then Orange Co. NC, then Caswell Co., NC (probate 4 Apr 1814, Madison Co., KY) was seemingly a native of the area around Fauquier Co., VA. I will give you my sources for the conclusion about Jesse's Virginia origins prior to 1755.

I have studied the records of many colonial Virginia counties in an effort to find a link of this Oldham to a family with that surname in either colonial Prince William Co., or later, in Fauquier Co. There are some *trace elements* of an Oldham family in Fauquier Co. in taxable/tithe records. The destruction of many Virginia records has not helped.

Jesse Oldham, according to one of the multiple lists of males given in Lloyd D. Bockstruck's Virginia's Colonial Soldiers (these existing original lists were made prior to the American Revolution) was in the 2nd Virginia Rangers, headed by Capt. John Ashby, 1755. Fauquier Co. records indicate that John Ashby (or at least his namesake) was later of Fauquier Co., formed 1759. I checked the surnames of all the other men in this muster list and found those names, for the most part, were later prevelant in Fauquier Co. Presumably Jesse's fellow Rangers were of the area around Prince William Co. or Stafford Co. I checked their surnames against lists of voters, tax lists, land records, etc.

My not-totally-firmed-up conclusion: There is little, if any connection, to be found in the currently existing records, that Oldhams of colonial Prince William Co. and of later Fauquier Co. are connected to the older Oldham families of colonial Northern Neck Virginia--i.e., Westmoreland, Northumberland, et al. They may have been linked, but to date, the links are missing, at least to this amateur genealogist.

It is entirely conceivable that ALL the colonial Virginia Oldham families are linked, but to date (after a few decades of searching), I have been unable to reach such a conclusion. Since your Oldham families seem to be connected with a Conway family, it MAY be easier to keep researching the collateral family of Conway. A fellow genealogist indicated that her Oldhams went directly from Northern Neck Virginia to the area around Jefferson Co., KY (Louisville area). Mine deviated to North Carolina.

By the way, my almost daily genealogical research reveals that the names Ann and Nancy are interchangeable.

I will be happy to share what little I have--but not with the Rectors (I am a Kemper-Utterback descendant) about the Oldhams, but I suggest you join the Oldham rootsweb, headed by Jan Oldham at oldham.jan@gmail.com. If you have access to the online database HeritageQuest through your local or a nearby public library, you might do some surname-and locality--searches. Some of the early Germanna Memorial publications also appear on that website.
