      EULOGY FOR ROBERT WINZENREAD

Robert Carlyle Winzenread was born in Indianapolis, IN Feb. 10, 1919 to Russell A. and Mable Vice Winzenread. He died at Mesilla Valley Hospice Aug. 27, 2005. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Warren and his foster parent, Cora Padrick. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Olive Griffith Winzenread, by three sons and spouses: Michael Winzenread, a family physician, and wife Anne of Edmund, OK; Stephen Winzenread, assistant sports editor for the INDEPENDENT TRIBUNE in Kannapolis, NC and his wife, Gloria and John Winzenread, family physician, and his wife, Vicki of Columbus, OH. He is also survived by grandchildren Guy and Laura of Oklahoma and Scott, Jenna, Michael and Rebecca of Ohio, a sister Dorothy Burke of Alta Loma, CA, sister-in-law Jeanette Winzenread also of CA and nieces and nephews.

When Bob was 10 years old and his brother 11, their parents were divorced. Cora Padrick, a widow, became their foster parent. She cared for them, loved them and set a good example for them until they graduated from high school. They called her "Aunt Cora".

After Bob and his family moved to Oklahoma, when Western Electric built there in 1960, he always took time to see "Aunt Cora" when the family went back to Indiana to visit relatives. Aunt Cora moved from her house in a small town, to her small farm, when Bob was a senior in high school. So he attended Clark High School, Johnson County, IN that year and met and began dating Mary Olive Griffith, a junior. They were married in June of 1941. Then just before Christmas, after Pearl Harbor, Bob received "Greetings" from Uncle Sam and was inducted into the Army Dec. 31, 1941. His basic training was at Camp Wallace, TX. He was then sent to Camp Davis, NC to train on 90 MM Anti-Aircraft guns. In the spring of 1943, he qualified for Officers Candidate School. He graduated as a 2nd Lt. and served in an Anti-Aircraft battalion at Camp Edwards, MA. until being sent to the Pacific. From June 1944, days after Saipan was invaded, he served there and on Tinian until returning home in Jan. 1946; being discharged from the army March 27, 1946.

Taking advantage of the G.I. Bill, Bob earned a B. S. degree in Business Administration from Butler University in Indianapolis in 1949. He was an accountant and office manager for 2 years at a small dairy and restaurant operation. Then he went to work for Western Electric (AT&T) as an accountant at their Indianapolis plant. He retired Dec, '79' with 28 years of service at their plants in Indianapolis, Oklahoma City and Columbus, OH. His last 8 1/2 years in Columbus he was assistant Manager of Auditing.

On Dec.31, 1979 Bob and Mary Olive came to Las Cruces for their retirement. A few weeks later they became members of The First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

Golf was an important part of Bob's life. He played many years (as long as he was able) with the "Old Timers" at NMSU golf course. He was a member and past president of the local chapter of the . .Telephone Pioneers of America. Bob loved all of his family very much and knew that they loved him.

Part of Bob's Memorial Service was "CROSSING THE BAR" by Tennyson

      Sunset and evening star
and one clear call for me !
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
when I put out to sea.

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
too full for sound and foam.
When that which drew from out
the boundless deep turns again home.

      Twilight and evening bell,
and after that the dark !
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
      when I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne
      of time and place
the flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
when I have crossed the bar.

Bob's favorite putter, a Titlest Acushnet "Bullseye" was also part of the Memorial service at his request.
