- We find the name spelled Stagg on all records until the family reaches Arkansas, then the Sis added. Growing up I was always told that the Stagg's came from Ireland, but in my research I find that they may have come from England. One was a marriage record in England. In the books, Passengers to America, Founders of New England and New World Immigrants, Gleanings for New England History, there are several pages stating that in April is ( April ) of 1635, Wm. Stagg was master of the Elizabeth de London, transporting parties (the names of passengers are listed) bound for New England.
On into the 1700's the name John Stagg is in "The Papers of the Continental Congress". In the book "New Jerseymen in the Revolutionary War " the names John, Thomas, James, Powles, Albert and Cornelius appear.
By the 1700's many of them had moved on to Ohio, there we find the name on many tax list and marriage records, among them are Thomas Stagg and Susanna Howlett. Thomas was born in NY, Susanna in 1794 in Vermont, They were married on Sept oeio, four children were born, John J, Margaret, Susannah (Mary Ann), Sarah Elizabeth and William T.
In 1825 the family moved to Columbia Township Jennings County Indiana, where four more children were born, Hiram P, Paul R, Sylvester S and Thomas S.
Thomas purchased 97.32 acres ( W 1/2 SW qtr ) of land on Feb 2 1825. There he farmed the land and accumulated a large amount of personal property and goods. Thomas died in Oct of 1832, leaving Susanna with the farm and seven small childrngh 7 1/2 months after his death to the eighth child. Susanna took possession of the property with out adminstration of the estate, this would cause problems later.
On Sept 8 1839, Susanna married Absalom Oldham, he also had children from another marriage, they lived on the farm until May 9 1842, the eldest son, John J Stagg, filed a suit against Susanna, Absalom and the other Stagg children, claie e.y counter with improvements made on the land, clothing, medicine, schooling, etc, for the children. Some of the real estate was declared not subject to partition and was sold. It was sold to Lord Viscount Nelson Howlett, (Susanna's maiden name was Howlett), on Nov 14 1842. Payment was made to the daughters, who had married by this time, Margaret Reno, Mary Ann Clark, Sarah Glasgow, and to sons John and William. Absalom Oldham was appointed guardian of the other children and made final settlement with each when they reached the age of 21.
The 1840 census shows Susanna and Absalom and eight children, four of these were hers from her marriage to Thomas, so the other four, more than likely, were his from his first marriage. On the 1850 census we find Susanna and Absalom ansr thre listed in is 1860, with Susanna age 66, Absalom age 70 and Hiram W Stagg age 14, this can't be one of Susanna's children, is he a grandchild, if so who's child is he?
