Buried in Flat Rock Cemetery, Ripley County, Indiana. Thought to have been poisoned since there was $3000.00 missing at the time he died.

Dorothy Bailey notes: Absalom Oldham was the son of Edward Oldham from England. They apparently settled for a time in Maryland, as Absalom was born 27 Nov 1789 in Cecil County, Maryland. At what date did they go to Pennsylvania? Edward Oldham apparently went to Beaver County, Pennsylvania as he died 10 Apr 1833 in New Sewickley Twp., Beaver County, Pennsylvania. If Edward Oldham b 19 Jun 1814 is the first born of Absalom/Sarah probably married 1813. Absalom would have been 24. Was Sarah Tucker/Kelly his first wife. Are they two different women? Absalom went to Indiana abt 1836. Absalom Oldham b27 Nov 1789 m. Margaret Unknown Tucker. Widow of John Tucker. John Tucker/Margaret were parents of William Tucker who went to Indiana with Absalom. William's obituary said "Family went to Indiana". Margaret Tucker died 1836, so do not think she went to Indiana. Perhaps brothers/sisters of William. Absalom and Margaret's marriage from Elaine K. Ballhagen who has family bible of Sarah and Absalom.

Hasmer Hill Road, Osgood, Indiana 47037 a cousin of Marvin Baldwin. Absalom Oldham is an ancestor of Randy and provided the information of Absalom's birth and death place/date. Some of his relatives thought Absalom had been married about 4 times.

23 May 1967: What information we have indicates that the first Oldham's came to America from England in the late 1600's. They were descendants of the Oldham family of Oldham, England.

Oldham, Lancashire, England took it's name from the Oldham family, who, in the middle ages, held Werneth Hall as their manor house. (From these Oldhams was descended Hugh Oldham, who died bishop of Exeter in 1519.)

At this time we do not have definite information as to who the first Oldhams were that came to the United States nor do we know exactly when. We hope, with time and research, to learn more about the early Oldhams in America. It is said the first Oldhams settled in Maryland and Pennsylvania. The following is what little information we now have on the Oldham ancestry :

Edward Oldham was born sometime around the 1750's and was in the Revolutionary War where he served with General George Washington at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania during the winter of 1776. His son Absalom Oldham served in the War of 1812. He was drafted in Beaver County, Pennsylvania in January of 1814 and served for two months. He was mustered into service in Butler County, Pennsylvania in the company commanded by Capt. Thomas Henry of the Pennsylvania Militia. He was discharged at Erie, Pennsylvania. In February of 1814 and left his discharge in Beaver County, Tennessee Regiment commanded by Col. Millen. Absalom Oldham was born about 1789. He moved to Indiana in about 1835 and settled in Ripley County. He was accompanied by two sons and a daughter. In the year of 1850 he was a resident of Zenas, Jennings County, Indiana. It is presumed he died in that state. His wife's name was Sarah Kelly.

Absalom Oldham was the father of Mejimcy Oldham whose descendants are listed in this book. Absalom and Sarah had at least one other son, Matthew, who has descendants living in the state of Indiana. There may have been a third son whose name was Absalom also. They had at least one daughter, name unknown. .. . . taken in part from the War of 1812 record obtained from the National Archives, Washington D.C. The above quoted information was taken from the Oldham/Campbell family history compiled in 1963- 67 by Colleen (Goehring) Switzer.

Jan, Robert Oldham, the son of Absalom Oldham of Cecil County, Maryland. His wife was Lydia B. Belt, b. September 23, 1840 in Decatur County, Indiana.

      Their children were Rosa B., b. @ 1860, d. 1933; Lafayette Frank, b. October 2, 1862, d. January 19, 1913; John W., b. April 5, 1865, d. February 7, 1905; Maggie Oldham, b. May 25, 1875, d. February 14, 1905.

Maggie was my great grandmother. She died when my grandfather was about 3 years old. My grandfather once told me what killed her and her brother John, who you will notice died a week before her.

Maggie married Perry Pickett, b. August 22, 1870, d. June 12, 1930. They were married July 23, 1901 in Decatur Co. In.

      Their son was Robert Heathcoat Pickett, b. June 18, 1902, d. February 4, 1 979.

      Randy Young Osgood, Indiana

They moved from northern Pennsylvania to Hamilton Co, Ohio. There dad received "Bounty Land" for his service in the war. His Name is Absolom OLDHAM. The land was in Ripley County, Indiana. It was interesting to notice that Pennsylvania abuts Ohio and the place they were at in Indiana are almost in a straight line. Darrell C Lewis email: d6c9lewis1@aol.com

The 1901 date came from another researcher, Wilma Holcomb. However, another researcher, Colleen Switzer stated Matthews date of death as Nov 21 1896. Neither researcher provided documentation of the date.

Am I interested? You'd better believe it.

      Hi Jan,
My name is Don Hughes, I live in Columbus IN now, however I was born and grew up in the Union Flat Rock Community south of Millhousen. I have the early record books of the Union Freewill Baptist Church which "Mathew Oldham" attended. I amdyciation there and provided the burial list posted on RCHS Web site http://www.rootsweb.co m/~inripchs/flatrock.html. I am a descendant of Obsalom Oldham through the "Tucker Line". My Grandmother Mollie Mary Catherine (Tucker) Hughes wife of Oscar Hughes was a daughter of Rev David A Tucker, son of William & Mary (Oldham) Tucker, Son-in-Law & daughter of Absalom Oldham.

When Willard Tucker & I compiled the information for our cemetery burial list, we had no dates in our cemetery records for Mathew Oldham's birth or death, so we used the dates you had posted on RootsWeb [Oldham Database]. Do you have verifif1or could it be in question?

Recently, I have been researching Absalom Oldham's family. I found in the Union Freewill Baptist record book of the church covenate meeting on Nov 21 1896 a description of Mathew Oldham's final Testimony when he died. I made a jpeg copy of ids. Hope you are interested!!!

I want to correct the death date to Nov 21 1896 on our cemetery records we have posted with RCHS unless you have a verified record of Mar 21 1901. Thank You in advance of your "Responce"!!!

As Ever Yours Truly Have a good Day!!! Don D Hughes
