Comments: Great to go through this!!!!

I am a decendent of George Solomon Odom (Oldham) Born 1765 in Virginia. I trace down to William and Sarah, to John Jackson Odom, to Washington Lafayette Odom, to James Washington Odom (Jim) to me. Where along this path do we part company??

      ************

I think this is George Solomon Oadham/Oldham who served in the Revolutionary War. His wife moved to Lincoln County, Tennessee after his death. His heirs include a Leroy and a Montcalm Oldham.

If this is the Rev. War Vet - he fathered 16 children by Jane. At the time of her widow's pension application she stated the oldest child was abt 74 and the youngest about 65

Married by Rev. Mr. Monroe. Crooked Run Church in Fauquier County, Virginia

      ***********

Eugene Cope notes: George S. Odom, was born about June 5, 1761? in Fauquier Co. Virginia. He resided in the northen part of Virginia area, where he was first listed on the 1777 Tax list as Gorege Odam. His family must have remained in that area, until after the Revolutionary War? He was listed as a soldier in 'Tripletts Cav Co from Fauquier Co VA, in 1780 and with Morgans Rifles, in the Southern Command. He saw combat action at the battle of "Cowpens", in South Carolina, in Jan 1781. He may have also been at the battle of Yorktown VA? He returned with his unit to northern VA, where He, met a miss Jane Russell, Daughter of David Russell, and Margaret, Elimina. ?, of Fauquier Co. VA. George was in the same unit as was Jane's older brother, Joseph Russell of Fauquier Co., also. They both must have been discharged from the Army about Dec, 1782?

He and Jane were married in Fauquier Co. in about early March, 1783? as their first child James, was born, December 17th of that year. They were married at the Crooked Run Church? with Church Banns. The sarvice was conducted by the Rev. Dr. John Monroe, Baptist MG, near what is now, Deliplane, Fauquier Co, VA. This was verified by Jane's younger brother, Henry Russel, in 1853.

They must have remained in the Northeast Virginia area until about 1790? as he was listed on the April 2, 1787 Tax List for Fauquier Co VA. They moved South to the Burke, Rowan and Lincoln Co North Carolina, area about this time as most of their children were born in these counties. George was listed as a witness to a property sell in Rowan Co, on April 1, 1794. He bought 100 acres in Lincoln Co NC on 1799. His farm was located in the North East, Lincoln County area, at McLins Creek. George continued to live and raise his family on the farm. He was listed on the 1800 and 1810 Lincoln Co. Census.

George Solomon Odom/Oldham (various spellings include Odum, Odam, Oddam, Oadham and more)was my 5X g-grandfather, and I'm trying to find out more about him. I have precious little documented--he's one elusive ancestor--and much of what I did have was lost in a computer crash. Here's what I know.

George Solomon Odom was b. abt. 1750-60, prob. in Fauquier Co. VA. That's where he married Jane Russell, believed to be dau. of David Russell. He fought in the Rev. War (see below). By 1800, they were supposedly in Lincoln Co. NC, but I've been unable to locate him on any census, nor have I found any deeds, land grants, etc. He died in Lincoln Co. NC on Oct. 27, 1819 (see below)--no will found. Jane and several of their children went to Hancock Co. TN. I can document my line from this point on, through daughter Catherine.

Most of my information on George Solomon Odom comes from wife Jane's application for his Rev. War pension. She was in her 90's when she applied and, unfortunately, could provide neither proof of his service nor proof of their marriage. (Proof of his service was found about 10 yrs. ago, spelled Oddam. I have not ordered the files, and cannot vouch that it's the right George.) Here are relevant parts of that application.

"..was a private in the Virginia Continental Line...belonged to Morgan's Riflemen"

"Before he went into the service, he resided in Fauquier Co. VA....she distinctly recollects hearing him say that he was in the battle at Cowpens, South Carolina...served in all 25 months."

"...married in the year 1783 by Publication in Fauquier County, Virginia, by the Revd. Mr. Monroe; that the Banns were published at Crooked Run Church in the aforesaid County" ...moved to NC, gives death date.

As for George's parents, I have a few clues but nothing firm.

Jane Russel Odom is listed on the 1860 Mortality Schedule of Hancock Co. TN. She died of "palsy" in April, aged 100 years.

Any help out there? Any other researchers for this line?

Hi Jan. I have the data, that you might need for your update? It will be in next mail. It is well documented. I have all of the support documents used for this information. As far as the name George Solomon Odom., who was born Dec 17, 1765. in Norfolk VA? He was not our George Oldham/Odam, who was born June 5, 1761. in Fauquier Co. VA.. Our George never used an " S " or any other initial on any document, that I have recovered.

His Widow, Jane used an S. on her attempt to get her widows pension, in 1853. This may have been why her request, was not approved? As his service records never had an S. on it. Another Lt. George S. Oldham with 5 years service, was approver a land grant, and his family got their pension. The George Solomon, Odom from, Norfolk VA, was a British/Tories Family, who moved to New York, to serve with the British..This again is documented. If you require a list of my support documents? I will make one for you.

      Bye for now Gene Cope
