    Notes
    • Peter and Elizabeth came to Alabama before 1824, probably from Waverly, Tennessee. In 1830 he was a farmer living in Eutaw, Greene County, Alabama, with his wife, four children, and three slaves. By 1851 he had a large acreage and twenty-four slaves, and on August 5, 1851, was the Justice of the Peace of Greene County.

In 1853 he moved to Anderson County, Texas, bringing his family, slaves, and livestock with him. He came by wagon train crossing the Mississippi River by ferry. Part of his family came with him and some married children came later. By 1855 he was living in the Beaver Creek Community (now Montalba) farming 555 acres of land with his sons, William and Theodore. He was levied taxes on his land, twenty-six slaves, livestock, a carriage, surrey and wagon. In 1856 he paid taxes on 2467 acres of land.

Pete Oldham built a fine two story home one-quarter mile north of the present Holly Springs Church. This home was still standing in the 1950's, but all that remains today is the fireplace chimney. Near the home on a flat plain, the people played games on horseback and held barbecues.
Mr. Oldham helped to build the Beaver Varrey (now Holly Springs) Primitive Baptist Church, where he attended and was an Elder. He also helped build a school building near the church. He donated land for it. Two of his boys were killed in the Civil War, one in Virginia and one in Louisiana. After the war, Mr. Oldham went by wagon to bring back his sons' body for burial at Holly Springs.

This family settled in Anderson County, TX in the small town of Montalba. There is a historical marker on the highway about Peter Oldham. He and many of his children are buried in the Holly Springs Cemetery.

      HISTORICAL MARKER NEAR MONTALBA
      ANDERSON COUNTY, TEXAS

In the area known as Beaver Valley, settled about 1853, the year that pioneer P. S. (sic) Oldham built his home a half mile N/W of this marker, this was on the Palestine-Athens Road. The route taken by mail hacks in early days, to the east was a campground where travelers often spent the nite, and where later inhabitants of the area used to gather for seasonal religious camp meeting, near the OLDHAM home was Beaver Valley Primitive Baptist Church. Mr. Oldham donated land for a cemetery adjacent the church. Nearby stood a noted early school, Beaver Academy--the church was later known by the name "Holly Spring".

The first local physician Dr. T. J. Adams built his homestead in the woods of Beaver Valley in 1859 and conducted a wide practice until he was past 80.
During the Civil War, while the young men of the area were away in the army an iron foundry in this valley made arms and bullets for the confederation.

In 1880 a post office was granted under the name MONTALBA suggested by early settler Tobe Hamlett, inspired by show clad mountain on the horizon. Mrs. Mollie Hamlett was the first postmistress. In lated years Montalba settlement was moved south ward, and thrives as a market and supply point for the valley.
